The student writes a basic paragraph (body paragraphs of essays) that contains a controlling idea and supporting detail. | 13 pts Good: The topic sentence contains one controlling idea, responds to the prompt question, and is the first sentence in the paragraph | 10 pts Fair: The topic sentence has 2 of the 3 criteria | 8 pts Not Yet: The topic sentence has 0-1 of the 3 criteria | 0 pts Zero: Blank or no submission |
The student identifies the most important things in their life. | 13 pts Good: The paragraph contains two supporting details from the approved list (i.e. fact, expert testimony, statistics, personal experience) that directly support the topic sentence | 10 pts Fair: The paragraph either has one weak (or unclear) supporting detail, and/or no connection to the controlling idea | 8 pts Not Yet: The paragraph has two weak (or unclear) supporting details and/or no connection to the controlling idea | 0 pts Zero: Blank or no submission |
The student writes a basic paragraph (body paragraphs of essays) that contains a controlling idea and supporting detail. | 7 pts Good: The paragraph contains a concluding sentence that sums up the supporting details of the paragraph and reinforces the topic sentence | 6 pts Fair: The paragraph contains a concluding sentence that either doesn’t sum up the supporting details of the paragraph or doesn’t reinforce the topic sentence | 4 pts Not Yet: The paragraph contains a concluding sentence that doesn’t sum up the supporting details of the paragraph and doesn’t reinforce the topic sentence | 0 pts Zero: The concluding sentence is missing |
The student writes an essay that follows standard formatting practices. | 7 pts Good: The paragraph is indented. There are no more than two distracting grammatical errors | 6 pts Fair: The paragraph is either indented incorrectly or has more than two distracting grammatical errors | 4 pts Not Yet: The paragraph is indented incorrectly, and it has more than two distracting grammatical errors | 0 pts Zero: Blank or no submission |
